May 15, 2013 BOOKLIST
Dawn West is like so many other young, hopeful college graduates living in New York City: she’s living in a tiny old apartment and looking for the writing job that will launch her career. An opportunity arises at a party hosted by the parents of her ex-boyfriend Robert, whom she still pines for, when Robert’s new girlfriend, Lily, introduces Dawn to a Charm magazine editor. Regina offers Dawn a job tracking down five decades’ worth of Charm’s “Ten Girls to Watch” winners for the fiftieth-anniversary celebration of the feature. Dawn is given a small windowless office in the magazine’s archives building in order to find all 500 previous winners and learn what they’re doing now. Dawn’s research and interviews with the extraordinary women who won the contest in past decades cause her to reexamine her own life and question some of the fears—such as starting her novel—she’s been battling. Upbeat and engrossing, this chick-lit novel gratifyingly focuses more on Dawn’s burgeoning career than on which man she’ll end up with.
Perfect for YAs with literary aspirations and/or dreams of working for a big magazine.
