SPONSORED CONTENT FROM BAKER & TAYLOR
Baker & Taylor is excited about Axis 360, the company’s new digital media platform for libraries. Baker & Taylor introduced the product last June at ALA in New Orleans and received fantastic feedback from customers. With Axis 360, Baker & Taylor provides patrons of public, school, and smaller academic libraries with a state-of-the-art system to find and check out downloadable digital content—starting with books that are compatible with the Blio e-reader.
Axis 360 gives libraries the technology and flexibility they need to meet growing patron demand for downloadable digital content. It is an extension of what Baker & Taylor already does for libraries by providing content in the formats that they need—physical and now digital. Baker & Taylor is uniquely positioned to understand and deliver what libraries need in the digital space: a simple yet sophisticated platform that will both collect and present digital content to library patrons and support existing collection development and cataloging workflows. Libraries can now have one vendor to support both their physical and digital collections. Baker & Taylor is the only vendor that can do that!
Benefits for Libraries
The Axis 360 platform is easy to use and, therefore, easy to manage for libraries. The design and features of the platform are geared toward reducing the demands on library staff to support patrons. Axis 360 also integrates with the library’s management system for patron authentication and communication of usage data, allowing libraries to analyze in one place circulation rates and patron usage for their entire collection. In addition, libraries can use Title Source 3 to purchase both digital and physical books in their existing workflows. And, with Blio, libraries can provide a free e-reading application that works across platforms and also expand their digital collections to include children’s books, cookbooks, and other content-rich titles.
Benefits for Patrons
Discovery through the library catalog is expanded by Axis 360’s Magic Wall, which showcases the library’s digital collection, where patrons can find and check out titles with a click of a button. Downloading to reading devices is made simple by instant delivery using cloud technology. There is also a community feature, if enabled by the library, in which patrons can provide their own reviews of titles, and an optional “Buy Now” button that allows patrons to bypass a long hold line and directly purchase a digital title that is in high demand. Most importantly, Axis 360 is the only place where a patron can check out a book for their Blio e-reader. Baker & Taylor currently has library distribution rights for more than 180,000 titles from top publishers—and that number is increasing rapidly.
Which E-readers Are Compatible with Axis 360?
The initial e-reader served by Axis 360 is Blio, which brings books to life with full-color and enhanced features. Blio enables libraries to expand their digital collections beyond the novel into children’s and other content-rich books, as well as e-books enhanced by publishers to include additional features, such as studio narration. Blio is also designed to work on a broad range of devices consumers already own—from PCs to tablets to smartphones—and it is fully accessible for the blind and visually impaired. In the near future, Baker & Taylor will be offering content for Axis 360 to enable libraries to support patrons that have the Nook, Sony, or other devices, as well as downloadable spoken-word audio for patrons that like to listen to their books.
