On a dark night when all the farm animals are sleeping, a rocket ship lands, and Moo Cow is “cownapped” by Space Cowboy Zork. But when Moo Cow becomes wild and uncooperative at the Intergalactic Rodeo, she is sent back to Farmer George. Sound effects accompany Hurd’s rollicking text and dancing pictures. The audio contrasts animal squawks, clucks, moos, and howls with rocket-ship whooshes, blasts, beeps, and “shazooms” and the spooky and weird speech patterns of the space aliens. Beach reads with expression and humor as he simulates the “kaboom” of the spaceships and the intergalactic grunts and groans of the off-world “zigs” and “zickens.” He gives Cowboy Zork an attitude and Farmer George a gruff wholesomeness that promise to tickle a child’s imagination.
